Marriage equality and the “right side of history”

with 2 comments

The slogan “Join the right side of history!” assumes at least one of the following:

1) That opponents of same-sex marriage actually know deep down that same-sex marriage should be legal, and just need a bit of prompting.

2) Opponents care more about the judgment of future people than for their current peers, consciences, or God.

3) All historical trends should be supported because the future is always better in every way.

  1. Well, all three of these are facile oversimplifications, therefore untrue, but you phrased them cleverly so I enjoyed reading it. Being on the “right side of history” mostly means going in the same direction that events ended up going – when you look back after a few decades. It’s rather hard to predict in the early phases, and it doesn’t just mean “right” in a moral sense, but also accurate to the prediction of probable futures. Things will be acceptable and considered normal in future that are not now. That is an inevitable fact, and it’s true across cultures, that standards of normalcy and what societies consider “good” will change. Some people grow and change in the average direction a majority culture goes, and others strike individual paths that are less typical.

  2. The beginnings of slavery were also, at some point in time, the up-and-coming trend, the “right side of history”. So was Nazism, along with every murderous “ism” history saw.
A catastrophe in the making can be carried by masses of good-willed people, a point that is lost on the true believers (as in “suffering from a true-believer syndrome”) of leftist and neoliberal Progressivism.
Every historic attempt to re-define human nature has crashed. The “new man” has always been a totalitarian dream that has ended its course in disaster.

This out-of-the-blue will to erase genders will go to the dustbins of history in due course, the point being to stop it making victims on the way. You do not erase billions of years of male-female separation and complementing each other. Since the dinosaurs and way before, males are males and females are females, each with its specialization.
Even if we are very evolved, very sophisticated animals, we still are animals. Turning our backs on nature will only wreak havoc, stress, and mental illnesses.
The divide between man and women, the complementing nature of the genders takes its source in life itself, and marriage is its human expression.
It is too archaic, too deep-rooted, to be tampered with.
